Homemade Eye Serum for Dark Circles

Try this oh-so-easy homemade and natural eye serum, made only with natural vegetable oils. It’s rather simple and is much cheaper to make than you might think. Besides, its nourishing oils will give you a treatment that most eye seruns can’t really provide: essential nutrients to your skin. Curious? Give it a try.

Table of Contents

Dark Circles, Wrinkles and Puffiness

This sums up why we use products for the delicate skin around our eyes. We wish to avoid all those. But there’s nothing like good sleep, drinking a lot of water, and a healthy diet to avoid those, especially food rich in vitamin K.

In addition to this eye serum recipe, you can also try some natural tips:

Use cold green tea bags

A rich anti-oxidant beverage filled with caffeine, also with anti-inflammatory properties. May reduce puffy eyes, by firming and tightening skin.

Use cold pads soaked in coffee

Another anti-oxidant beverage with caffeine that has the same effect as green tea. Firms and brightens the skin under your eyes.

Use aloe vera gel

If you happen to have an aloe vera plant at home, you might try applying some of the juicy leaves’ contents to dry skin (including the delicate parts underneath your eyes). Its gel is filled with vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and fatty acids, and has anti-inflammatory properties that could help with puffiness.

Apply cold pads or ice cubes

The low temperature itself reduces inflammation, constricts blood vessels and tightens skin, helping reducing puffiness

You can find more tips in this article from Healthline. You will find out that this eye serum recipe contains all the rest.

The Eye Serum

I’ve decided to skip any water content and make it a 100% oil product, to avoid the growth of bacterias, microbes or fungus. I could use a preservative, it’s true, but the skin around our eyes is really delicate and sensitive, I was afraid to use it in an eye treatment-specific product.

So there you have it.

It is actually quite simple: this eye serum is made with only 3 oils. But these are oils that are very nourishing, anti-inflammatory, conditioning and packed with vitamins and anti-oxidants:

Pomegranate Seed Oil

Pomegranate Seed Oil, rich in several polyphenols, it is also a good source of vitamin K. Vitamin K along with vitamin A (retinol) works as a great dark circle fighter. This oil is also used for anti-aging action helping to reduce cellular damage in your body, free radicals damage, decreasing inflammation, the incidence of age spots and wrinkles, and providing some natural protection from UV damage. Its high vitamin C content also helps to fight bacteria and fungus (helping with acne), due to its antimicrobial properties and reduces cellular damage as well.

Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E oil: vitamin E oil (tocopherol) has powerful anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, therefore, also helps fighting free radicals and reduces UV damage. Combined with the other oils’ Vitamin C content, it boosts the anti-oxidant properties of both vitamins C and E. I have used this oil alone in my under-eye skin, and I can testify that it does reduce swelling and dark circles. They don’t disappear completely, but they are diminished.

Hempseed Oil

Hempseed oil: it is a great source of fatty acids namely, omega 3 and omega 6, low on oleic acid, and contains vitamins A, C, D and E, making it a light oil, highly conditioning and rich in anti-oxidants.

Vitamin E oil also works as the oil anti-oxidant to help prevent rancidity to this serum. It won’t make your serum last for years, but it will help last longer.

Needless to say, use only fresh and good quality oils. The shelf life of this serum will be around the nearest best-by date for all oils.

How To Use This Eye Serum

Apply your roll-on in your finger, and tap lightly the serum under and around your eyes. You can also use this serum in deep wrinkles, for example, around your lips, or any zone of your face that needs deep hydration. I have very dry skin on my jaw zone and I often use this serum there.

  1. You sound like you know a lot about natural beauty products, that’s awesome.  The more that we, as a society, move away from the chemically made, animal-tested variety, the better we will be.  How many times a day should you use this serum?  you can probably post affiliate links for the roll on tubes and the pipettes?

    • Hello Rene and thanks for your comment and interest.

Well, as I test these natural cosmetics on myself, they are actually animal-tested xD

Joke aside, my main goal is to give alternatives to people, especially to those that suffer from skin conditions and can’t seem to find a good enough product just to wash or hydrate their skin.

I aim to give people the same options they have for food: you can make it at home, with your recipes and your ingredients, the way you really like, or you can go to a restaurant, or eat fast food, whole food, fancy food…. Cosmetics should be the same 🙂

My knowledge comes from learning a lot, and experimenting some. Why am I really not afraid? Taking the food analogy, is almost as being afraid of a bag of apples vs a can of pre-made food that can last 5 years…. What do you think will do more harm to you? 🙂 I use vegetable oils, mostly, vegetable waxes or beeswax, water (!). They can really make no harm, as long as you use these products within shelf-life (or you use a preservative to prevent bacteria and fungus to grow).

I completely forgot to link the pipettes and roll-ons to actual products…. Thanks for the heads-up.

      Cheers,

      Sofia

  2. As I age, I have become less and less impressed with the puffy darkness around my eyes!  I have never been one for makeup or expensive skin treatment (I consider myself to be “wash and wear”) but I think it’s time to do something to boost my self-esteem.  I’m going to make this eye serum you’ve recommended.  I’ll let you know how it works for me!

    • Hello Cynthia, thanks for your comment and interest in this eye serum.

I totally understand you. I don’t use make-up either and I like to wash myself and be done with it – that’s why I love handmade soaps, they don’t force me to use a lotion every time I shower. So, I do like products that actually work 😉

Please, make the serum and let me know how it worked for you! In fact, I have used only vitamin E oil only for a while and it reduced puffiness and dark skin. So if you wish, you can try that one too.

Products rich in vitamin K are wonderful to reduce the dark skin under your eyes, surprisingly, olive oil is rich in both vitamin K and E! Another idea for another eye serum formula 🙂

You can also try some of the natural tips in the article (like using soaked tea bags, soaked disks in coffee or aloe vera).

I suppose that if you alternate these natural tips with the eye serum, you will have success at least with an improvement, for sure, as you will provide several different nutrients to your under-eye skin.

      Cheers,

      Sofia

  3. I’m particularly interested in dealing with wrinkles. I had this colleague back in the day with a lot of wrinkles and that made me determined to find a remedy to wrinkles. I’ll like to know if there are special instructions to applying aloe vera to the face? I’ve had people use it overtime but it still doesn’t seem to clear wrinkles.

    • Hello Jude and thanks for your comment.

Aloe vera is a very good ingredient but doesn’t especially attack wrinkles. It has anti-inflammatory and antisseptic properties, so it acts more as a skin soother. Please, read more about aloe vera for wrinkles in this article from Healthline. It states that there’s no scientific evidence that topical aloe vera usage will have any effect on wrinkles.

I use aloe vera as an ingredient for natural cosmetics. I suppose you can use the gel from the leaves directly on your skin, or even hair, but bear in mind that, without a preservative, it won’t last more than 1 week if kept in the fridge.

As for specific anti-wrinkle ingredients, and an anti-wrinkle lotion, I also have this post on my blog that provides more information about the subject. Besides the serum I use any of the anti-wrinkle lotions under my eyes as well, and I feel that it hydrates my under-eye skin (without any negative effects).

I won’t say that these natural products will make miracles. What I can observe in myself is that there has been no increase in wrinkles, and skin feels soft, elastic and moisturized all the time. I’m very satisfied with these natural products, and I don’t plan to use store-bought ones. I suppose each person is different, and one got to find out what really works for your skin.

      Cheers,

      Sofia
