Nourishing and Simple

For this recipe, you will only need:

Olive oil is highly conditioning and emollient. It is also very mild on the skin, making it adequate for the delicate skin of your lips. Remember to use extra virgin olive oil, since it’s a high-quality oil per se. The better the ingredients, the better the product you will have.

You can actually use another oil, like sunflower oil, if it’s easier/cheaper to get in your living area. Check out Natural Oils For Your Skin for good replacements.

Beeswax as the name says, is a wax produced by honey bees to build their own beehive. Thanks to its antibacterial agents, beeswax has a long history of being used in cosmetics and also for certain skin issues. Historically, this has included treating burns and wounds. Beeswax is ideal for moisturizing sensitive skin, hydrating the skin and soothing certain skin conditions.

Other Ingredients

The essential oil is optional and you can put your favorite one, or you can skip it entirely. Avoid using citrus essential oils, as they may cause photosensitivity in your lips. Eucalyptus is my favorite essential oil for balms and salves, due to its camphoraceous, minty scent.

Balms do not need preservatives as they are oil-based products, and do not contain any water. Still, they last longer by using an anti-oxidant, to prevent the oil from going rancid.

The vitamin E is an anti-oxidant to increase the lip balm best by date, it is optional but reccommended, so that your lip balm lasts longer. I’ve bought the oil and use it for homemade cosmetic recipes or applied directly to the skin (it’s vitamin E after all). I never tried this recipe with vitamin E capsules, but if the content is mostly oil, I don’t see why it shouldn’t work (in this case, 1 capsule is enough).

Always Sterilize Your Containers!

Lastly, it is very important to make sure that the containers you are going to use to keep your lip balm are sterilized. Use a solution of water and bleach to sterilize your containers. Make sure they are absolutely dry before pouring your mixture, as water can create bacteria and fungus, something you don’t want on your handmade lip balm.

I hope you enjoy this oh-so-easy recipe that will super-moisturize you lips!

That’s it! Your lip balm is ready to use!

Notes About This Recipe

I’ve made this lip balm for the first time in September 2019. I’ve poured on lip tubes and a small plastic container I gave to my daughter to use. I still have my lip tube now and it’s still in very good condition, it’s not rancid, it doesn’t smell bad and it’s not too soft or “wet” like it’s melting, or too hard that you can’t spread it well on your lips.

I love this lip balm, as it is soft and sort of buttery, and leaves my lips moisturized for a few hours, unlike many lip balms I’ve used before. With olive oil being cheap in Portugal, and assuming you already have a container (so that you don’t need to spend money on it) this lip balm costs less than 0,10€ for a lip tube of 4g.

I hope you enjoyed! Feel free to leave a comment or make any question.

    • Hello, thanks for your nice comment and your interest in lip balms! This is what HerbAlcochete is about, to help people making their own natural cosmetics and hygiene products. You can use a lot of oils to make a lip balm, and I am planning to post more recipes.

If you let me know what oils are most common in the place that you live (perhaps palm oil? coconut oil? these oils actually don’t need a wax, only liquid oils) I can post a recipe for you 🙂
