Etsy is an American e-commerce website focused on handmade or vintage items and craft supplies. You can buy there anything from handmade natural soaps to handmade cosmetics, and all sort of soapmaking ingredients.
If you don’t know Etsy shop yet, I can tell you it’s starting to have a dimension similar to Amazon, being in direct competition with Amazon Handmade, Ebay and Craigslist. Etsy has made in 2018 a total sales of US$ 3.83 billion dollars, and had in the same year over 60 million items in its marketplace.
In an interview in August 2013, CEO Chad Dickerson emphasized the importance of human interaction and meaning from creativity in regard to his perspective on Etsy. Dickerson described the website as “a platform that provides meaning to people, and an opportunity to validate their art, their craft”, and after spending time with Etsy users, Dickerson learned that “all commerce is about real human interaction”.
Dickerson also provided a summation of Etsy that is a further reflection of the company’s relationship- and meaning-based ethos: “At the end of every transaction, you get something real from a real person. There is an existential satisfaction to that.Etsy Wikipedia
Asked about competitors, Etsy’s European CEO said, “As far as I am concerned, the more people highlighting the value of supporting micro-producers and buying handmade and vintage directly from them, the better.”Etsy Wikipedia
Well, enough said. Maybe Etsy is there to make business in first place (aren’t we all? We all want a paycheck at the end of the month), but it provides an opportunity not only for you to purchase unique, handmade items made with care and passion, but also to give a new way of income for micro-production artisans.
As a small artisan myself, I am happy that there’s an online shop such as Etsy and we can, with little investment, let the world know about our work and pieces of art, as an alternative to mass production, depersonalized items.
What Can I Buy On Etsy Afterall?
My biggest obstacle about soap making and candle making was to find places where I can buy supplies: ingredients and some more specific equipment. Etsy is big enough and focused enough on crafts to have available every single ingredient or material you might need – if you don’t find something anywhere else, you will find it here.
It’s definitely the best place to find stuff for handmade crafts. For example, it was the only place I could find handmade lard available to make lard soap.
It also has a nice set of handmade and natural cosmetics from various companies, many of them local and small-sized. You can find pretty much anything cosmetic handmade: soap, shampoo bars, conditioner bars, lotion bars, balms, salves, handmade deodorants, natural make-up, etc.
I leave you a list of ingredients to make cosmetics at home you can find at Etsy. You can also check out some nice handmade cosmetic products, if you are not really into DIY, but love natural cosmetics.

You Can Also Sell at Etsy
Etsy is popular as a side-business, as well as a place to buy goods made from recycled and upcycled materials, along with less expensive or more unusual versions of mass-produced items. The unique nature of many of the items for sale is part of their appeal to some shoppers. Product photos on Etsy tend to be editorial or artistic instead of commercial catalog style.Sellers can add 13 tags to their products to help buyers find them, and buyers can choose to search for items available locally. Etsy staffers publish lists of featured items.
Most sellers are women, who tend to be college-educated and in their twenties and thirties. Individual Etsy sellers decide which payment options to offer buyers; these options may include credit card, cheque, money order, PayPal, bank transfer, and Etsy gift cardEtsy Wikipedia
As I’ve previously mentioned, this is a great marketplace to show and sell your own work, especially if you are your own business and want to find a way to get better known. I still don’t have a personal experience with Etsy, Ebay or Amazon, but I am seriously thinking of it.
Although I’ve given up on selling soap and natural cosmetics, due to heavy legislation, I make natural candles and air fresheners – see my work at Tagus Home, my online store.
