Coconut Oil Deodorant Recipe

This was actually an "accidental" recipe: it was supposed to be a hair product and became a natural deodorant!
I have taken this recipe from the book "Botanical Skincare Recipe Book" from the Herbal Academy to make a hair pomade. But the final product was too thick and felt uncorfortable for my hair. In the end, I've realized it had most ingredients I've found in other natural deodorant recipes.
I've taken the daring step to try it on my arm pits and see what it did. I've realised it was relatively efficient as a deodorant! I've melted it again, and poured it in a deodorant empty container. And voilá, this deodorant recipe was born!

Preparations

  • Disinfect all your equipment before starting. You can boil some of your equipment (like the double boiler, glass cups, spoons), and use a solution of 1 liter of water with 1/2 cup of bleach, for items that are not heat-resistant (like the milk frother, plastic cups or the lotion containers)

  • Assemble the ingredients and equipment first.

  • Measure the oil and the beeswax to a double boiler (you can also use a metal jug). Weight the kaolin clay into a cup to use later.
30 g refined or organic coconut oil, 25 g beeswax

  • Fill the pan with water to use as a double boiler. Turn the heat on and place the double boiler inside the pan with water.

  • Let the beeswax and coconut oil melt completely (beeswax melts at ~60ºC)

  • Turn off the heat and remove the double boiler from the water. Add the kaolin clay and mix well.
    8 g kaolin clay
    bentonite clay
  • Let the mixture cool down a bit then add the essential oil and mix again.
    8 drops essential oil lavender
small bottles of essential oils decorated with peppermint and rosemary plants
  • Before you pour your mixture into the container, it is very important to make sure they are desinfected. Use a solution of water and bleach to sterilize your container, and make sure they are absolutely dry - water can create bacteria and fungus, something you don't want on your deodorant.
  • Pour the mixture in the deodorant containers. If the misture hardens before you can pour everything, you can reheat it again.
  • Wait 1-2 hours for the mixture to solidify completely
  • Make sure you clean up the wax from the utensils while it's in liquid form, with a kitchen paper towel. If needed, reheat the utensils.
